The old Soviet monument on Alexandrovska in Burgas, Bulgaria

Burgas was originally founded by Thracian tribes several centuries before Christ. When the Roman Empire expanded its influence to the region, the Roman emperor Vespasian changed its name to Deultum and turned it into a retirement colony for Roman legionnaires. The colony developed and eventually added the mineral springs Northwest of it as a curative settlement or wellness center, called Aqua Kalidae. The name Burgas or Bourgas was adopted in the 17th. century after the liberation from the Ottoman Turkish Empire.
